Sesame Street has certainly added a ton of diversity to their muppet creations since the PBS show debuted November 10, 1969. The show continues to find ways of teaching acceptance and tolerance by introducing more diverse characters like "Julia," the newest addition to the crew!
Julia is autistic. She first appeared in the 2016 episode “See Amazing in All Children.” You can find Julia in books, mobile apps and online, helping children understand how to interact with people who have autism. Well, she has officially joined the show.
The President and CEO of the Autism Society tells the Associated Press, “When you can have a character that shows what autism is, it will help everyone who watches ‘Sesame Street’ have a really good appreciation of what autism is, in a positive way.”
