A woman in Portland, Oregon received a disturbing phone call from someone telling her to unplug her Alexa devices immediately. It was one of her husband's employees, who claimed he received audio files containing conversations that had taken place in the couple’s home. When he played back the audio, they couldn't believe their ears. The man lived 176 miles away.
After some investigation, one of the “Alexa Engineers” was able to confirm that, in fact, the device had captured audio, unsolicited. They've programmed the device to record, but only when prompted.
The company speculates that it may have misinterpreted background conversation as a set of commands. So…it’s NOT just Siri.
Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad, if she translated the conversation to "Meow meow" language?
