Kurt Schusterman has built a career around transforming brands, divisions and organizations at an inflection point. As a company president, chief marketing officer, general manager and now small business franchise owner, Kurt has successfully grown brands and businesses across six different industries.
Kurt started his career in sales and brand management with Fortune 500 company Brown-Forman Corporation. He was promoted quickly through the ranks and because of his enterprising brand successes, was tapped to launch a new venture which grew from zero to $60 million in revenue before the division was spun off to the industry leader.
As chief marketing officer at Mail Boxes Etc., Kurt re-engineered the marketing discipline and brand positioning that reversed a declining sales trend for the world’s largest business services franchise. When Mail Boxes Etc. was acquired by UPS, Kurt led the market research and marketing efforts that led to the re-branding of over 3,500 locations of The UPS Store – considered the largest retail rebranding effort in history.
Kurt and his family relocated to Brentwood, Tennessee, in 2004 from San Diego. This was the beginning of what Kurt calls phase two of his career where he was hired by private equity firms to turn around and help sell struggling businesses.
In 2015, Kurt acquired the Nashville franchise for California Closets. He wanted to run a small business “where the employees loved coming to work, the company differentiated on product quality and customer experience and we could give back to our community. I’m able to use all my career experience to run a small business that’s making a difference in people’s lives….it’s a dream come true,” Kurt says.
Kurt earned his master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Integrated Marketing Communications Program and a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration with a marketing major from Miami University (Ohio).
He and his wife Adrienne, who have been married for more than 30 years, have two daughters, Torrey and Natalie. Kurt enjoys cycling around the beautiful Middle Tennessee countryside and hiking through our Tennessee state parks.
