8-Year-Old Pays off Entire School Lunch Debt by Selling Key Chains

We’ve heard of celebrities and large companies donating over the years to erase students lunch debt from their schools. But this time, it was 8-year-old Keoni Ching who raised more than $4,000 by selling his homemade keychains. The keychains were sold for $5 each, raising a total of $4,015 during his Benjamin Franklin Elementary School's Kindness Week in Vancouver, Washington. The money raised went directly towards erasing the lunch debt from not only his school but also six others. Keoni wanted to do something special for "Kindness Week" and said he was inspired by the 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman who donated more than $27,000 to cover students school lunch debt in November of 2019.

Once word got out about Keoni's philanthropy project, people from all over the world started requesting for custom keychains. Moved by Keoni's kindness, some people donated over $100 for just one key chain and with the help of his parents and grandparents Keoni was able to sell and deliver over 300 key chains.

Keoni said in an interview that helping others is important because "it just makes the world a better place."
