Why Dierks Bentley's New Collab Offers A Deeper Meaning Than You'd Think

Dierks Bentley and Stephen Wilson Jr. joined forces to pay “tribute to a currency stronger than the dollar” on the second track to release from Bentley’s upcoming album. The collaboration, “Cold Beer Can,” arrived on Friday (March 14).

Bentley and Wilson teamed up to write “Cold Beer Can” with Luke Dick and Jon Randall last year at a writer’s camp in Nashville, Tennessee. The group delivered a ballad with “a meaning deeper than its title would suggest,” per a press release issued Friday morning to announce the song’s debut. Bentley stirred anticipation for “Cold Beer Can” with teasers on social media earlier this week.

“I was a really big fan of Stephen’s and asked him to jump in on some writes with me, and we ended up writing two songs that both made the new record. What I love about this song is that the title and idea seem like such familiar territory for country music, but when you actually dig into the lyrics of the song, it’s much more meaningful,” Bentley said in a statement. “I asked him to come in and lay down some acoustic guitar parts once we got in the studio, and he crushed it.”

“There are some things that money just can’t buy. People crave an experience. Sometimes bartering is required. A fermented meeting ground perhaps,” Wilson added. “A cold beer can be a simple and affordable catalyst in the chemical and emotional reactions of this human life. Humans are looking for something to carry us on or bring us together.”

“Cold Beer Can” follows “She Hates Me,” Bentley’s heartbreak anthem that sees the country star unable to escape his revenge-seeking ex-girlfriend. He released it on Valentine’s Day. Bentley also recently announced his headlining “Broken Branches Tour,” which kicks off in late May with singer-songwriter Zach Top and Georgia duo The Band Loula. Bentley previously said he’s “got a million ideas for the set list rolling around in my head,” as he gears up for the tour with stops at more than 30 arenas and amphitheaters across the country.
